About Me

The Pilates Journey….

Like many instructors, I was introduced to Pilates due to an injury. I ruptured three vertabra at a dance camp, and was told that I would need surgery to fuse them back together. I knew my body had the power to heal without surgery, but I didn’t know exactly what to do to find the means to the end. I was studying dance with a teacher who had worked with Joe Pilates in New York, and she suggested I deepen my Pilates practice and incorporate Alexander Technique. I’m not an Alexander Technique certified instructor, though I do use much of what I learned over my two years of study. This formula worked for me, and I was pain-free, able to heal without the scheduled surgery, and for the twenty-five years since, Pilates practice has kept my core “powerhouse” in shape, my spine aligned, and despite whatever life throws my way, I remain full of what Joe Pilates called ” a zest for life.”

I studied dance in my teens and twenties, majored in music in college, and continued my passionate pursuit of movement through my love of equestrian sports, mountain biking, and modern dance. Later in life, I also became a certified elementary educator, got an associate’s degree in Computer Science, and an MBA with an emphasis in Public Administration.

I decided to pursue Pilates instructor certification in 2014 with Power Pilates in New York. I worked with a Power Pilates teacher trainer here in Maine, and at a studio in Boulder, Colorado. I taught for two years at a studio in Colorado before coming back to Maine in 2019.

I teach in-person and online. During the pandemic, I developed many workouts for people who could not access equipment, or who had injuries or special physical circumstances. I became creative at learning how to repurpose ordinary household furniture as Pilates equipment, and developing pandemic-specific workouts, like a seated chair workout for computer workers suffering from neck and back pain, which I still use today.

I’ve worked with equestrians, athletes, seniors, people with injuries, and folks who just want a great workout. I work with both people who want to get into shape, and also people who come with special situations needing a lot of modification. I am what is generally referred to in the Pilates community as a classically trained instructor, because I practice the traditional Pilates system, working through the progressions of Joe Pilate’s original exercises, which were specifically designed to optimize results. Using this system, our body re-aligns, lengthens, and strengthens.

I do a free introductory consultation, so you can see how Pilates could help you, and in that session, I work with you to assess your needs and possible course of action.
